Understanding HMS 1 vs HMS 2
HMS 1 (ISRI codes 200–206) is wrought iron and steel scrap with a minimum thickness of 6.4 mm (¼ inch). It consists of structural plates, beams, heavy machinery, ship plate, and prepared steel sections — free of coated, oxidised, or alloy materials. HMS 1 is the cleaner, higher-melt-yield grade and trades at a premium over HMS 2.
HMS 2 (ISRI codes 207–211) is heavier mixed steel scrap with a minimum thickness of 3.2 mm (1/8 inch). It includes black and galvanised pipe, light structural steel, sheet, automotive body steel (with attachments removed), and may contain limited non-ferrous attachments. HMS 2 is typically blended with HMS 1 to optimise mill furnace economics.

HMS 1 (ISRI 200–206) consists of clean, wrought iron and steel sections ≥ 6.4 mm (1/4 inch) thick with no attachments. HMS 2 (ISRI 207–211) is mixed steel scrap ≥ 3.2 mm thick that may include black and galvanized pipe, light structural steel, and some non-ferrous attachments. The 80:20 mix is the most common export ratio.
What is the typical HMS 1 & 2 export ratio?
The standard international export ratio is HMS 1 & 2 (80:20) — 80% HMS 1 and 20% HMS 2 — though 70:30 and 90:10 mixes are also traded. Mills in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Turkey, and the UAE typically buy 80:20. Specifying the ratio at the LC stage avoids disputes at the discharge port.
What is the minimum order quantity?
We accept break-bulk HMS shipments from 5,000 MT and containerised HMS from 25 MT (one 20ft container). For container loads, plates and sections are pre-cut to ≤ 1.5 m for safe stuffing. Bulk-vessel parcels of 10,000–30,000 MT are loaded at Rotterdam, Amsterdam, or Antwerp under CFR/CIF Incoterms.
