ISRI-aligned QA Workflow

    Quality Control Process

Quality control at Nautica Metal Scrap B.V. is a six-stage workflow applied to every container leaving our Rotterdam yard. The objective is single and explicit: a Millberry container ships as Millberry, a 6063 container ships as 6063, and a 304 container ships as 304 — every time, on every contract, for every buyer.

Stage 1 — Gate inspection on inbound trucks

Every inbound truck is weighed on a calibrated 60-tonne weighbridge, photographed and visually graded against ISRI master samples by the yard supervisor. Lots that fail visual grade are tagged and routed to the re-sort bay; they are not paid for at the supplier rate until re-graded. Moisture, contamination and unauthorised attachments are flagged at this stage to prevent yard-level grade drift.

    Stage 2 — Yard re-sort and segregation

Material is re-sorted by alloy family — copper, aluminum, brass, stainless — and within each family by ISRI grade. Grade-specific bays prevent cross-contamination during storage. Painted, anodised, coated or tinned material is segregated from clean material. Photos are taken of each lot before transfer to the loading bay, building a per-lot dossier that travels with the container.

Stage 3 — XRF spot-checks and chemistry verification

A handheld XRF gun is used at the loading bay to spot-check chemistry against the declared grade. Aluminum alloys are verified for Mg, Si, Cu and Fe windows. Copper wire is verified for Cu purity and tin content. Stainless lots are verified for Ni, Cr and Mo to distinguish 304 from 316. Lots outside tolerance are diverted to the appropriate grade bay; they never reach the container.

Stage 4 — Magnet pass and ferrous separation

Aluminum and stainless lots pass a magnet test before stuffing. Any ferrous attachments — screws, brackets, valve stems, ferrous fragments — are removed. UBC bales additionally pass through an eddy-current sorter on inbound. Maximum tolerated free-iron contamination is 1%; lots above tolerance are re-processed before release to the loading bay.

    Stage 5 — Pre-load container audit

Before stuffing, the container floor is inspected and lined where required. The loaded weight target is confirmed against the booked vessel weight slot. Stuffing is photographed in sequence with timestamps. Bridge tickets confirm net loaded weight container-by-container. A pre-seal photo of the loaded cargo and a post-seal photo of the closed door are filed in the shipment dossier.

Stage 6 — Third-party inspection and document release

On buyer request, SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, CCIC or TÜV inspect at the loading point. The inspector observes stuffing, draws representative samples for XRF or wet-lab analysis, witnesses the seal application and issues the inspection certificate. Bill of lading is released only after inspection clearance and against the payment terms agreed in the sales contract.

    Sample retention and dispute resolution

Representative samples from each loading lot are retained at our Rotterdam yard for 90 days. If a buyer assay challenges our declared chemistry, the retained sample is re-tested at an independent EU laboratory and the result is binding. To date our retained-sample programme has resolved every chemistry dispute on first re-test.
