Rotterdam Stuffing Workflow

    Container Loading Process

Container loading at Nautica Metal Scrap B.V. follows a documented six-step stuffing workflow at our Rotterdam yard. The objective is to maximise loaded weight within the booked vessel weight slot, protect the cargo for ocean transit, and produce a complete photo and document trail for the buyer.

Step 1 — Container collection and pre-load inspection

Empty containers are collected from the terminal in line with the booked vessel cut-off. Each empty container is inspected for floor integrity, door seal condition, side-wall damage and cleanliness. Containers failing inspection are rejected and replaced. Container number and tare weight are recorded against the booking.

Step 2 — Floor lining where required

Non-ferrous grades that risk in-transit shift (loose copper wire, light aluminum extrusion) are loaded into floor-lined containers. Lining options include heavy-duty kraft, woven polypropylene or pallet base, depending on grade and destination. Lining is photographed before stuffing begins.

Step 3 — Stuffing sequence and weight management

Stuffing is performed by trained yard operators using forklifts, grab loaders or telehandlers depending on grade. The target loaded weight is set in advance from the bridge calibration and vessel cut-off. Cargo is built front-to-back with weight evenly distributed to prevent corner overload. Loose cargo is levelled, bales are nested, ingots are palletised and strapped.

    Step 4 — Photo dossier

Each container is photographed at four stages: pre-stuffing (empty container with floor lining), mid-stuffing (cargo levelled), post-stuffing (loaded), and post-seal (closed door with seal number visible). Photos are timestamped and saved to the shipment dossier. Buyers receive the dossier alongside the bill of lading.

Step 5 — Weight verification and bridge ticket

Each loaded container is weighed on our calibrated 60-tonne weighbridge. Gross weight, tare weight and net weight are recorded on the bridge ticket and matched against the packing list. Containers above the booked vessel weight slot are offloaded and re-stuffed; containers below are topped up where the grade allows.

Step 6 — Seal application and dispatch

A high-security bolt seal is applied to the container door once weight verification is complete. The seal number is recorded on the packing list, bill of lading, inspection certificate (if applicable) and photo dossier. The container is then dispatched to the terminal for vessel loading. Booking lead time from contract signature to dispatch is 7–14 days subject to grade availability and vessel space.
