What is Shredded Steel Scrap?
Shredded steel scrap is ferrous scrap produced by industrial hammer mills (shredders) that process end-of-life vehicles, appliances, and mixed steel into fist-sized, homogeneous fragments. Classified as ISRI 210/211, it is among the highest-quality ferrous scrap grades available.
The shredding process magnetically separates ferrous material from non-ferrous metals, plastics, rubber, and other contaminants — producing a clean, dense product ideal for electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is shredded steel scrap?
Steel scrap processed through industrial shredders into fist-sized pieces. It offers high density, consistent chemistry, and low contamination — making it premium EAF feedstock.
Where does shredded steel come from?
Primarily from end-of-life vehicles and white goods processed through hammer mills with magnetic and eddy current separation.
Why is shredded steel more expensive than HMS?
Processing costs (shredding, separation) are significant. The resulting product justifies a $20–30/MT premium through better furnace performance.
What is the difference between ISRI 210 and 211?
ISRI 210 is mixed shredded scrap; 211 is specifically from automotive sources. Both have similar specifications and are often used interchangeably.
Can shredded steel be shipped in containers?
Yes. 40ft GP containers hold 25–28 MT of shredded steel. Bulk vessel is preferred for orders above 5,000 MT.
