    India — import market overview

India is among the largest global importers of non-ferrous and ferrous scrap, driven by 200+ secondary copper refiners (largely in Gujarat and Maharashtra), a fast-growing secondary aluminium sector serving the wheel and extrusion industries, and 1,000+ induction-furnace steel mills consuming HMS as primary raw material. Demand is structural: India's per-capita refined metal consumption is rising 4–6% annually with constrained domestic primary supply.

    Popular grades purchased

Copper: Millberry, Berry, Birch/Cliff to refiners in Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Mumbai. Aluminium: UBC, Taint/Tabor, 6063 extrusion, Troma wheels to secondary smelters and wheel manufacturers. Stainless: 304 and 316 solids and turnings to induction-furnace mills in Wankaner, Jodhpur, Mumbai. HMS: 1&2 80:20 to induction-furnace mills across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu.

    BIS pre-shipment inspection

India requires BIS-format pre-shipment inspection from approved agencies — SGS India and BV India are the most common nominees. The inspector witnesses container stuffing at Rotterdam, applies seals, and issues the BIS-format certificate. The certificate is mandatory for customs clearance at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai and Mumbai.

    Shipping routes

Rotterdam → Nhava Sheva: direct services on Maersk, MSC, CMA-CGM and Hapag-Lloyd, weekly sailings, 18–22 day transit. Rotterdam → Mundra: similar weekly frequency, 18–22 days. Rotterdam → Chennai: 22–25 days via transhipment at Colombo or Singapore. Rotterdam → Mumbai: 18–22 days direct. Routing via Cape of Good Hope when Red Sea disruption applies adds 7–10 days.

    Container options

20GP — most common for non-ferrous (22–24 MT) and HMS (~26 MT). 40HQ — for UBC bales and Tata 6063 (~40 MT). 40OT open-top — for oversized HMS plate. Multi-container parcels of 5–20 boxes qualify for tighter LME discounts and consolidated documentation.

    Documentation requirements

Commercial invoice (showing buyer's IEC and GST), detailed packing list, B/L, weight tickets, EUR.1 where applicable, Annex VII (waste shipment movement document), BIS-format pre-shipment inspection certificate, XRF analysis. Indian customs additionally requires Bill of Entry filing, HSN classification (HSN 7404 for copper waste, 7602 for aluminium, 7204 for ferrous, 7503 for nickel/stainless).

    Payment terms

Standard: 30% TT advance against signed PI / 70% LC at sight against scanned documents through buyer's nominated Indian bank. Alternative: 100% LC at sight from a first-class Indian bank. Open account terms available for long-standing repeat buyers with confirmed banking history.

    Transit time estimates

Rotterdam to Nhava Sheva 18–22 days; add 3–5 days for customs clearance and discharge; add 2–7 days inland transport to mill. Total Rotterdam-to-mill door: typically 25–34 days for West India destinations, 30–40 days for East and South India destinations.

    LME-linked pricing for Indian buyers

All Nautica offers to India are LME-linked: discount to LME 3M (copper, aluminium, nickel) or Platts TSI HMS index (ferrous), locked at the agreed quotation period. India-specific discount adjustments capture freight from Rotterdam ($80–150/MT typical) and the BIS inspection cost. Multi-container monthly parcels earn the tightest discount band.
