Turkey — import market overview
Turkey is the world's largest importer of HMS scrap (driven by 30+ EAF steel mills concentrated around Iskenderun, Aliağa and Marmara), a major copper rod producer (Sarkuysan, Erbakir), and home to growing secondary aluminium and brass capacity. The Platts TSI HMS 1/2 80:20 CFR Turkey index — the global ferrous benchmark — is set by import deals landing at Turkish ports.
Popular grades purchased
Ferrous: HMS 1&2 80:20 in container and break-bulk parcels to EAF mills. Copper: Millberry, Berry to rod plants; Birch/Cliff to brass mills in Gebze and Kayseri. Aluminium: UBC, Tata 6063, Troma to secondary smelters in Konya and Manisa. Stainless: 304 solids to re-rollers in Mersin and Aliağa. Brass: Honey and Pales to Gebze brass mills.
TSE and Turkish import compliance
Turkish import requires TSE (Türk Standartları Enstitüsü) alignment on documentation, plus an import licence for certain ferrous categories. Pre-shipment inspection by SGS, BV or Intertek is generally accepted in lieu of mandatory third-party inspection. Customs at Mersin clears most scrap categories within 24–48 hours of vessel discharge.
Shipping routes
Rotterdam → Mersin: direct weekly sailings on Maersk, MSC, CMA-CGM, Arkas — 12–14 days transit. Rotterdam → Iskenderun: 13–15 days via Mersin transhipment or direct service. Rotterdam → Aliağa: 11–13 days direct. Break-bulk HMS parcels to Mersin and Iskenderun load at Rotterdam or Amsterdam on combination carriers, 5,000–30,000 MT per parcel.
Container and break-bulk options
Non-ferrous: 20GP and 40HQ container shipments. HMS: container parcels start at one 20GP (~26 MT); break-bulk economic from 5,000 MT. Most Turkish HMS imports historically move break-bulk because of EAF mill receiving infrastructure; container HMS is growing for spot and specialty grades.
Documentation requirements
Commercial invoice, packing list, B/L, weight tickets, EUR.1 (where applicable), Annex VII for waste shipment, SGS/BV/Intertek inspection certificate. Turkish customs operates on the Customs Information System; documentation is uploaded electronically by the buyer's customs agent. HSN codes: 7404 copper, 7602 aluminium, 7204 ferrous.
Payment terms
Standard: 30% TT advance / 70% LC at sight from a first-class Turkish bank (Garanti, İş Bankası, Akbank, Yapı Kredi). Alternative: 100% LC at sight. Open account terms available to repeat buyers with strong banking history. Turkish lira fluctuations are mitigated by USD-denominated invoices — universal in scrap trade.
Transit time estimates
Rotterdam → Mersin port: 12–14 days. Add 1–2 days customs clearance and discharge; 1–4 hours inland to most EAF mills around Iskenderun. Total Rotterdam-to-mill: typically 14–17 days — among the fastest Europe-to-buyer routes in our portfolio.
LME-linked and TSI-linked pricing
Non-ferrous to Turkey: LME 3M minus discount. HMS to Turkey: priced against the weekly Platts TSI HMS 1/2 80:20 CFR Turkey index minus our trader margin. Mersin freight is the lowest in our network ($50–80/MT), so Turkish CIF discounts on non-ferrous are typically the tightest of any destination.
Start sourcing from Nautica
Send RFQ with grade, tonnage, destination port (Mersin/Iskenderun/Aliağa) and payment terms. Nautica responds within 24 hours with written CIF offer.
