UAE — import and re-export hub
The UAE is a strategic re-export hub for scrap metal feeding the broader GCC, East Africa and South Asia markets. Jebel Ali Free Zone hosts large-scale storage and consolidation operations. UAE-based traders source European-origin material, repackage or consolidate, and ship onward to Indian sub-continent, East African and Iranian buyers. The country also hosts growing secondary aluminium and rod-mill capacity domestically.
Popular grades purchased
Copper: Millberry, Berry, Birch/Cliff and insulated wire to JAFZA traders and domestic rod producers. Aluminium: UBC, 6063 extrusion, Troma wheels, Taint/Tabor to JAFZA consolidators and Abu Dhabi smelters. Stainless: 304 and 316 solids to UAE fabricators and re-export buyers. HMS: container parcels to GCC steel mills via UAE consolidation.
UAE import compliance
UAE import is governed by Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship and Federal Customs Authority. Most scrap imports clear under standard commercial channels with no mandatory pre-shipment inspection — but SGS, BV or Intertek PSI is universally requested by UAE buyers for downstream re-export to BIS/CCIC/TSE markets. Importers in JAFZA operate under free-zone licences.
Shipping routes
Rotterdam → Jebel Ali (Dubai): direct weekly sailings on Maersk, MSC, CMA-CGM, ONE, Hapag-Lloyd — 16–20 days transit via Suez. Rotterdam → Khalifa Port (Abu Dhabi): 18–22 days. Routing via Cape during Red Sea disruption adds 7–10 days. UAE is one of the fastest Europe-to-Gulf services.
Container options
20GP for non-ferrous (22–24 MT). 40HQ for UBC bales (~40 MT). Insulated wire in 20GP. UAE consolidators commonly take large multi-container parcels (10–30 boxes) for re-export onward shipping, qualifying for the tightest LME discount bands in our portfolio.
Documentation requirements
Commercial invoice, packing list, B/L, weight tickets, EUR.1 where applicable, Annex VII, SGS/BV/Intertek pre-shipment inspection certificate, XRF analysis. UAE Customs accepts standard commercial documentation; JAFZA free-zone import handled by buyer's freight forwarder under free-zone customs procedures.
Payment terms
Standard: 30% TT advance / 70% LC at sight from a first-class UAE bank (Emirates NBD, ADCB, Mashreq, FAB). Alternative: 100% LC at sight, or open account for long-standing UAE traders. USD-denominated invoices universal.
Transit time estimates
Rotterdam → Jebel Ali: 16–20 days; add 1–3 days customs and discharge; same-day to JAFZA storage. Total Rotterdam-to-JAFZA: typically 18–23 days. Onward shipping from JAFZA to Indian or East African buyers adds 7–14 days. UAE is one of the fastest Gulf delivery destinations.
LME-linked pricing for UAE buyers
Non-ferrous priced as LME 3M minus discount with relatively tight freight ($60–110/MT to Jebel Ali typical). UAE consolidators benefit from the best LME discount bands in our portfolio because of large monthly tonnage and fast freight. Many UAE buyers run frame contracts with named monthly tonnage and discount bands.
