    Vietnam — import market overview

Vietnam's manufacturing sector growth — electronics, automotive parts, construction steel, cable and wire — drives consistent scrap import demand. The country hosts major cable manufacturers in the south (HCMC and Binh Duong), induction-furnace steel mills in the north (around Haiphong and Thai Nguyen), and fast-growing secondary aluminium serving the electronics export sector.

    Popular grades purchased

Copper: Millberry, Berry to cable manufacturers in HCMC and Binh Duong; Birch/Cliff to brass and electronics scrap processors. Aluminium: UBC, 6063 extrusion, Tata/Tutu to secondary smelters serving electronics housings; Troma to wheel manufacturers. Stainless: 304 solids to kitchenware and food-equipment fabricators. HMS: 1&2 80:20 to induction-furnace mills in northern Vietnam.

    Vietnamese import compliance

Vietnam tightened scrap import rules under Decree 38/2015 and subsequent amendments — only companies with valid Environmental Protection Permits can import scrap. Pre-shipment inspection by SGS, BV, Intertek or Vinacontrol (local) is required. Nautica verifies buyer's import permit before contract.

    Shipping routes

Rotterdam → Ho Chi Minh (Cat Lai): direct weekly sailings on Maersk, MSC, CMA-CGM — 28–32 days transit via Suez. Rotterdam → Haiphong: 30–34 days direct or via HCMC transhipment. Rotterdam → Da Nang: ~32–35 days via transhipment. Routing via Cape during Red Sea disruption adds 7–10 days.

    Container options

20GP standard for non-ferrous (22–24 MT). 40HQ for UBC bales and Tata 6063 (~40 MT). Insulated copper wire in 20GP (~18 MT). Vietnamese buyers commonly take 3–10 container parcels per shipment with monthly evergreen contracts.

    Documentation requirements

Commercial invoice (buyer's tax code), packing list, B/L, weight tickets, EUR.1 where applicable, Annex VII, SGS/BV/Vinacontrol inspection certificate, Environmental Protection Permit reference from buyer. Vietnam Customs requires electronic declaration via VNACCS system handled by buyer's customs broker.

    Payment terms

Standard: 30% TT advance / 70% LC at sight from a first-class Vietnamese bank (Vietcombank, BIDV, Vietinbank, Techcombank). Alternative: 100% LC at sight. USD-denominated invoices universal. New buyers typically run 30:70 on first 3 contracts.

    Transit time estimates

Rotterdam → Cat Lai: 28–32 days; add 3–5 days customs and discharge; 1–4 hours inland to most HCMC mills. Total Rotterdam-to-mill: typically 32–40 days. Haiphong and northern mills add 2–4 days inland from northern ports.

    LME-linked pricing for Vietnamese buyers

Non-ferrous priced as LME 3M minus discount, HMS against TSI HMS 1/2 index minus margin. Freight Rotterdam to Cat Lai $110–160/MT typical. Vietnamese buyers benefit from competitive Maersk/MSC direct service pricing and the country's strategic position on the Singapore-China trade lane.
