What aluminium wheel scrap is
Aluminium wheel scrap — trade name Troma — is end-of-life automotive alloy wheels stripped of steel valves, tyre rubber, balance weights and steel inserts. The base alloy is typically A356.2 (7% Si, 0.35% Mg) cast aluminium, ideal for secondary smelters producing new wheel ingot or master-alloys. Recoverable metallic yield runs at 96–98% from clean Troma lots.
ISRI Troma specification
ISRI 'Troma' is defined as: 'Clean aluminium wheels, free of attachments and other foreign material such as tire weights, valves, sleeves, plastic, lead, iron, etc.' Our contracts add a written tolerance clause: maximum 0.5% iron attachment, maximum 0.1% magnesium balance weight, maximum 0.5% tyre rubber residue. Wheels failing these tolerances are returned to the dismantler or downgraded to Tense/Taint mixed.
Inspection and decontamination
Every wheel pallet is hand-checked for steel valve stems, lead balance weights, plastic centre caps and tyre rubber. Steel valves are magnet-removed, lead weights manually pulled, plastic caps discarded. Random wheels are spark-tested or XRF-scanned to confirm A356 base alloy and rule out steel-laminated cast wheels. Pre-shipment inspection by SGS, BV or CCIC is available at buyer's option and witnessed at container stuffing.
Packaging — loose or palletised
Default: loose stacked in lined 20GP containers, 22–24 MT per box. Palletised loading on Euro pallets (~1 MT per pallet, 22 pallets per 20GP) is offered for buyers with forklift discharge constraints. Containers are photographed before sealing and weight-verified at the terminal; seal numbers print on the packing list.
Export documentation
Each Troma shipment includes commercial invoice, packing list with wheel count and average weight, B/L, EUR.1 origin certificate, EU Annex VII waste shipment document for non-OECD destinations, XRF analysis report and inspection certificate. Buyers in India receive BIS-format docs; Turkish and Korean buyers receive market-specific paperwork.
LME-linked pricing
Troma is priced as a discount to LME 3-month aluminium settlement on contract date. Typical Troma discount: $300–$500/MT depending on cleanliness, magnesium content and destination freight. Wheel-back-to-wheel recyclers pay the tightest premium because A356 chemistry feeds directly into their new-wheel alloy without dilution.
Destinations and transit
Primary buyers: Indian wheel manufacturers (Nhava Sheva, Mundra — 18–22 days from Rotterdam), Korean wheel mills (Busan — 30–35 days), Turkish secondary smelters (Mersin — 12–14 days), UAE re-export distributors (Jebel Ali — 16–20 days). Weekly direct sailings from Rotterdam on Maersk, MSC and CMA-CGM.
Source — European ELV dismantlers
Our Troma stream comes from licensed end-of-life vehicle (ELV) dismantlers across the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France. Under EU ELV Directive 2000/53/EC dismantlers must depollute and segregate aluminium before shredding — this gives us clean wheel lots before they enter the broader Zorba stream. Provenance documentation is available on request for buyers needing supply-chain audit.
Order process
RFQ → written CIF/FOB offer within 24h → signed contract → 30% TT advance → loading + inspection in 7–14 days → 70% LC at sight against scanned B/L → originals released. New buyers receive XRF reports and a yard video before the first container ships.
Quality guarantee
If independent discharge-port inspection finds steel/iron contamination above the 0.5% contract tolerance, Nautica credits the difference at the contract discount per the standard quality clause. This contractual backing is why our Troma repeat-buyer rate is among the highest in our portfolio.
